Mihaela Matešić is engaged in various research fields of contemporary Croatian language, focussing on the usage in public discourse, both spoken and written. Her main interests are in the fields of cognitive linguistics, sociolinguistics and corpus linguistics. Focussing on the semantics and phonology interface, she developed a methodological approach that combines both disciplines in exploring the orthoepic plan of the Croatian standard language. Together with Ana Meštrović and Sanda Martinčić Ipšić, she was a member of the research team that developed the syllabification algorithm for Croatian. The team was awarded in 2019 with the University of Rijeka Award for Transfer of Knowledge.
